Autism report, recommendations getting lengthy review

It will be fall before the families of people with autism hear back from the Nova Scotia government about improving support systems in the province.
Four departments are currently reviewing the report.
Community Services Minister Denise Peterson-Rafuse says she is thrilled to have received a report written by the families of people with autism, which outlines 53 recommendations.
“It’s coming from individuals that have children with autism. They know it. They deal with it each and every day in their lives,” she said. “That’s who we need to talk to. That’s who we need to hear from.”
Education Minister Marilyn More says she won’t be able to respond to the report until at least the fall.
“It covers the lifespan of children, youth and adults with autism,” she said. “Our staff need to review the recommendations, see what can be integrated, then we’ll respond.”
Justice Minister Ross Landry says he wants to do everything to move the recommendations forward.
“We need to make sure that our children and our community is safe,” he said. “So for justice it’s a safety issue
The health minister also says it will take some time to thumb through the document.
