Parks Canada launches coyote awareness campaign

Parks Canada is holding open houses on coyote safety in the area of the province where a young woman was mauled to death last fall.

Officials say there was a good turnout Wednesday night for the first of four open houses.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park Superintendent Helene Robichaud says people just needed to dialogue.

“I think people need to be reassured but also need to know what they can do to help in bettering the situation.”

Ironically, the provincial trapping program won’t be in the area where Taylor Mitchell was killed last fall.

“That applies to provincial jurisdiction,” says Robichaud. “So that does not apply to the national park.”

She says in the national park they want to focus on education and awareness instead.

They’re telling people who want to hike to try and do it in the middle of the day and carry a walking stick, dog or bear repellent.
