Animal Control officers are investigating the behaviour of a pit bull who charged an RCMP officer, forcing him to shoot it.
The Mounties were called to a home in Wellington around 6 p.m. Sunday where a pit bull was running loose in the yard.
When officers arrived, they found the homeowner trapped in his vehicle with his 16-year-old son.
“The dog was barking and running around, and RCMP tried shouting at the dog to get it to back off, which it did,” explained Cst. Tamu Bracken.
Bracken a neighbour came to help, and the dog left – but then returned and charged the officer.
“The officer, fearing for his safety, shot the dog,” said Bracken. “The dog ran off and was found deceased a short time later by the owner.”
Bracken says charges against the owner will depend on the results of the investigation by animal control officers.
