MLA code of ethics voted down

A code of ethics will not be a part of the Dexter government’s MLA expenses reform legislation.
The government’s majority on the legislature’s law amendments committee today voted down the Liberal proposal to include an ethics code in the bill. It would have included a promise not to use political office for personal gain.
Liberal house leader Manning MacDonald says including it would have shown the government was serious about reform.
“I believe it’s something that’s being employed in other jurisdictions,” says MacDonald. “I believe it gives the member when he’s first elected a set of rules, a set of obligations that he must adhere to.”
The government says it may present a stand alone ethics bill at a later date.
The committee’s NDP majority also rejected a Conservative proposal today to give the public a majority voice on the committee overseeing MLA’s expenses.
