Colby Village Elementary in Cole Harbour has won a national contest asking them to come up with a clever name for an RCMP puppy.
The grade six class chose to name the police-dog-in-training “Crosby”.
The school didn’t get a visit from NHL superstar Sidney Crosby, but they got a visit from the next best thing, “Crosby” the puppy.
Class teacher Graham Pierce says the contest rules worked in their favor.
“It sounded like a contest that we were meant to win,” Pierce said. “Because the rules were the names all had to begin with the letter “C”, and they had to be one or two syllables long.”
Grade six student Sidney Carrol says it was an easy decision to name the puppy after their hometown hero Sidney Crosby, who is a former Colby Village Elementary student.
“Well he went to our school and Mr. Pierce tought him and he’s our teacher this year,” she said. “So it means a lot to our class.”
John David says Crosby is an inspiration.
“It’s kind of hard to believe that he was like us,” said David. “It just proves that anyone can start small, but grow up to be something big.”
The class beat out over 9,000 other entrants to win the contest.
