A 49-year-old man has serious injuries after a chain reaction car crash caused a traffic pole to fall on him.
Police say a van ran through an intersection around noon at Taranaki and Forest Hills Drive. A pickup was marking a left turn and the light turned yellow. Police say the pick-up was proceeding legally but saw a van in the distance speeding up to beat the light.
The van hit the truck, lost control and hit a traffic pole. That pole came down and hit a pedestrian who was standing at the corner. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Police are charging the driver of the van with failing to yield in an intersection.
Meanwhile police were dealing with another serious crash, this time in Bedford.
Police were called to the intersection of Damascus Road and Duke Street just before 2 p.m.
Police say they believe a silver Volkswagen and a black SUV were travelling in opposite directions on Duke Street and one of the vehicles turned in front of the other.
