City staffers say huff about third harbour crossing is unwarranted

City staff say a report going before council is getting a strong reaction for no reason.
Several councillors have said they’re against the report which identifies the preferred site for a third harbour crossing. However staffers say this in no way means they’re recommending building a third bridge or tunnel.
Dave McCusker with Halifax traffic and transportation prepared the report, which says a crossing could be needed in six years.
It says the best location would be from Highway 111 in Woodside to the CN Rail land in the South End.
McCusker says they’re not recommending anything at this point.
“We’re not recommending a bridge or a tunnel be built,” he says. “We’re recommending that everything be done to prevent that.”
Halifax Bridge Commission CEO Steve Snider says it’s advanced planning and that’s all.
“Precisely. It’s a matter of reserving the corridors so in the event that we need to consider this in the future we have the option to do so,” says Snider
Snider says he doesn’t want a third crossing, but based on current projections one may be needed.
“But I’m hoping that it won’t be,” says Snider.
Snider agrees with councillors, who say they want more bus lanes, carpooling and bicycles instead of a $1.1 billion bridge.
