Peninsula councillors give thumbs down to new harbour crossing

Regional councillors are saying no to a third harbour crossing.
A staff report is coming to tonight’s council meeting detailing the possible locations and costs of a new bridge or tunnel between Halifax and Dartmouth.
The report shows the new crossing would likely run from Highway 111 in Woodside to the Port of Halifax and CN lands in the south end.
The Herald reports a regional councillors who represent peninsular districts are against the idea.
Two years ago, the cost of a third bridge with six lanes was estimated at $1.1 billion while a four-lane tunnel would cost $1.4 billion.
The mayor calls this latest report “an unfortunate waste of time and money.”
Among those reported to be against a third crossing are Coun. Jerry Blumenthal (North End,) Coun. Sue Uteck (South End) Coun. Jennfer Watts (Connaught-Quinpool.)
The councillors say the city should be thinking about sustainable transportation, not making it easier for more cars to get onto the peninsula.
