Desmond Maguire’s first-degree murder trial surrounding the brutal death of 20-year-old Cole Harbour woman began Wednesday.
Maguire is charged in the December 2007 murder of 20-year-old Jennifer Horne.
Crown prosecutor Robert Morrison described to the jury the evidence he will present about how Horne was killed.
He says Horne was bound and suffocated with duct tape over her mouth, nose and eyes. He described how she was sexually assaulted and then stabbed multiple times including several stab wounds to her genitals.
Horne’s brother and her father will testify about the time leading up to her disappearance and when her body was found.
About 20 other family members sat in the gallery, becoming emotional as Kevin Horne identified his daughter’s clothing and described repeated phone calls, he says were from the accused — Desmond MaGuire.
Maguire has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to first-degree murder. His co-accused, Ashley Haley, pleaded guilty on Monday.
Seventeen days have been set aside for the trial. The chief medical examiner is expected to take the stand Thursday.
