After a raucous debate last week over who will get ice time and when in the new four-pad arena city staffers briefed council on what they say is a lot of misinformation.
“When it comes to the issue of providing access and dividing up the ice time, frankly we dropped the puck,” said Paul Dunphy with the Community Development Department. “I think we could have kept council better in the loop so you were more able understand the issue and respond to the questions.”
Dunphy says the new rink will have equal time for sport, age and gender.
“You can’t grow if you don’t have ice time,” he said. “So we don’t know what the ultimate numbers are with some of these groups until they actually get an opportunity to grow. They’re frozen out.”
He says the new policy is only for the arena but stresses the need for it in all 21 rinks in HRM.
