Another child abuse charge laid in metro

For the second time this week, a parent is being charged in a case of alleged child abuse.
The father of a 2-month-old baby boy is under arrest after the baby was brought to the emergency room at the IWK.
Police spokesperson Brian Palmeter says they were contacted by hospital staff early Wednesday morning when the parents brought the baby in.
“The Integrated HRP RCMP Major Crime Unit investigated and determined that the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome,” he says. “And as a result, the father of the boy was arrested.”
IWK pediatrician Dr. Amy Ornsteen says these types of cases still happen. She says it’s tough for many parents to cope with a new baby.
“I think that it requires insight into asking oneself ‘how am I coping here?’, ‘what place am I at right now?, Am I starting to get frustrated?, Do I need a break?” says Ornsteen.
She suggests anyone who feels they have reached a breaking point can call 811 or community services for help.
The baby is expected to make a full recovery.
The father is facing a charge of aggravated assault and will be in court on August 23.
