Jennifer Horne’s killers sentenced

Two and a half years after the murder of a young Dartmouth woman, her killers have been sentenced to life in prison.
Justice Richard Coughlin handed down the sentences for Desmond Maguire and Ashley Haley early Wednesday afternoon.
The couple had each entered guilty pleas on charges of first degree murder in the 2007 death of Jennifer Horne.
They won’t be able to apply for parole for the next 25 years.
Seven people, including Horne’s parents, read victim impact statements into the record as Maguire and Haley sat silently, staring at the floor.
Outside the courtroom, Kevin Horne said it was tough to go through the process, but they are relieved it has ended.
“It’s been hard, but our goal from the start was justice for Jennifer,” he said. “We knew that the only way we could do this was to be there, show our support, and give her our support. We felt her with us every day, and it’s just been a long two and a half years.”
He says the life sentence for him started with his only daughter’s death, but he hopes they can pick up the pieces.
Along with the prison sentence, both killers will have samples registered with the national DNA bank.
They’ll also face weapons restrictions if they’re released.
