Convicted sex offender released due to paperwork problems

An apparent paperwork glitch has led to the release of a convicted sex offender in Halifax.
Robert Thomas Crowe, 22, is accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl last month while on probation for sexually attacking two teens in 2007.
He was due in court Monday for a possible bail hearing, but wasn’t brought over from the Burnside Jail.
The judge said an order to hold Crowe in custody expired that day – and he didn’t have the authority to remand him again.
The Crown had planned to oppose Crowe’s release due to the serious nature of the charges.
Sherri Aikenhead of the Justice Department tells the Herald it appears Crowe’s name wasn’t on the jail’s list for transport to court on Monday. She says the department is investigating to find out why.
Crowe is scheduled for another court appearance in late July.
