Pride Week kicks off in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pride Week in Vancouver has been launched with the NDP outlining a wish-list of steps to fight homophobia.

Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra-Herbert is calling for a province-wide tips line so people can report gay bashings and for the City of Vancouver to put more cops on the beat in Davie Village.

Ron Stipp with Westenders Against Violence Everywhere admits things have got better over the years, but he feels there are still a lot of areas that need improvement.  “Recently there have been a number of high profile bashings and it just shows the problem hasn’t disappeared yet.  We just have to be vigilant to make sure that doesn’t increase again.”

The NDP’s other proposals include funding a victims services worker for those targeted by the discrimination and ensuring crown prosecutors are aware of the legal hate crime provision.

They also want more promotion of diversity in our school systems.
