Regional fire investigators have come up with a cause for the fire at Dalhousie on the weekend.
An explosion and fire rocked the Dal Life Sciences Building late Saturday.
Work was being done on the roof earlier in the day, and the ignition source was a propane torch used to heat roofing material.
Fire Services spokesman Dave Meldrum says it goes down as an accident.
“This was certainly an accidental fire,” says Meldrum. “It wasn’t deliberate on anyone’s part, and it’s just one of those regrettable fires around the use of handheld torches.”
He says construction crews do check after torches are used, but he says there are occasions when a smouldering ember could lay buried and be undetected for several hours.
