English Channel swimmer tackles Harbour crossing

Kristen Roe has conquered the English Channel – and she’s celebrated with a swim across Halifax Harbour.
The first Nova Scotian to cross the Channel returned home this week and met the mayor and commuters on the Halifax waterfront this morning before plunging into the water for a relatively short trip from the Dartmouth NSCC campus to Murphy’s on the Water.
The swim took less than 30 minutes and was a relative walk in the park for the experienced open-water swimmer who says her Channel crossing took 17 hours of battling rough waters, cold and nausea.
“It was the very first marathon swim where I ever questioned ‘Am I going to make this?'” she said. “I think that was about halfway, at seven or eight hours.”
Speaking on Maritime Morning this week, Roe says she couldn’t keep liquids down and was swimming slower than normal so she was getting cold.
Mayor Peter Kelly was on hand for today’s swim but didn’t join Roe for the swim.
