Correctional workers ordered to report inmate assaults

The justice minister has ordered jail guards to report any assaults by inmates to police.

Ross Landry says he wants to send a strong message to prisoners and correctional workers that violence won’t be tolerated.

He tells the Herald some previous incidents may have been brushed off by guards and other workers because they didn’t seem like a big deal – but he says inmates need to know they can’t lay a hand on employees, guards, police officers or sheriff’s deputies.

Joan Jessome of the Nova Scotia General Employees Union says jail guards welcome the order, because they didn’t always feel their concerns were taken seriously.
