Justice minister addresses assault in Sheriff’s van

The Justice Minister is applauding the actions of sheriffs who stopped a fist fight between inmates in the back of a sheriffs van.
Ross Landry says the sheriffs followed procedure and did everything right. But he says he’s not surprised at the level of violence shown.
“We’re dealing with people who can’t get along with people in society. We’re dealing with the criminal element,” he says. “We’re dealing with people that believe that physical force is the way to communicate and to get your point across.”
Landry says procedures and protocols are always being reviewed, adding this specific situation is definitely a learning tool.
“As the justice minister, as a government, we’re taking a zero tolerance to it,” he says.
Reports are the victim in the attack was 67-year old Ernst Fenwick Macintosh. A convicted sex offender, he was being transported back to the jail after a court appearance in which he was denied bail.
