Man arrested in murder of Paula Gallant

RCMP and Halifax police have made an arrest in the murder of school teacher Paula Gallant. The unidentified man was arrested at 8:30 Tuesday morning.
Gallant’s body was found in the trunk of her car outside the Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea school the morning of Dec. 27, 2005. Her murder has been unsolved ever since.
Cpl. Joe Taplin tells Maritime Morning the arrest is the result of a lot of police work:
“It’s been ongoing for approximately four and a half years and it was a very long, extensive investigation,” he said. “It was just great work by RCMP-HRP Integrated major crime members there, they put long dedicated hours into this investigation and it’s still continuing as we speak today.”
Police won’t say if there was a specific tip that broke the case.
The man arrested has not been identified and charges haven’t been laid yet.
A family friend of 15 years says he’s ecstatic that someone has finally been charged in the case. Ted McInnes says “it’s been a long time coming.”
“You keep holding out hope and you hope the right thing is always done. To finally hear it, it does feel great.” McInnes says “we’d like to see closure in this and would like to see the person rightly convicted in the end. But I know it’s just an arrest.”
“It’s an awful thing for people to go through, you know just normal everyday people. But there have been a lot of people who have been working hard for this point and keeping the faith up and hoping for the best.”
Gallant’s husband, Jason MacRae had been questioned and released after the 2005 murder of Gallant. News 95.7 tried to contact him today at his home. The woman who answered the phone said MacRae was not there and they had nothing to say to the media.
