Construction underway on new Coast Guard HQ

Halifax-based members of the Coast Guard are getting a new home.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay and federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shae were in Dartmouth Sunday to announce federal funding for the new $14.5-million facility, located near the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.
Speaking on CTV, Shae says it’s been a long road getting to this point.
“It’s been a work in progress for approximately ten years,” she said. “It’s good to finally see construction happening here.”
The 5,300-square-metre building will bring together more than 160 Coast Guard employees who currently work in two separate buildings in Dartmouth.
The government hopes the location will allow the Coast Guard to work more closely with their counterparts in the DFO.
The headquarters will feature some green innovations like a plant roof and a cooling system that uses seawater from Bedford Basin.
Construction is expected to be completed in November 2011.
