Swarming victim arrested after turning on attackers

A Dartmouth man who says he was swarmed and beaten by five teens this week is furious that police arrested him for trying to defend himself.

Tim MacIntyre says the group threw a rock at him Tuesday night – then beat him up when he confronted them.

The 62-year-old says he got away, picked up a tree branch and went after his attackers. That’s when he was arrested for disturbing the peace – though he was released without being charged.

MacIntyre tells CBC police didn’t do their job and should have chased after the kids.

Police spokesman Cst. Brian Palmeter says MacIntyre’s actions may be understandable, but he crossed a line when he turned aggressive and police have a duty to restore order.

The assault is still under investigation.
