Weekend inmates being sent home

Some of the people who are supposed to serve their court ordered sentences on weekends are being sent home instead.

Director of Correctional Services Sean Kelly says it’s because of overcrowding at the Burnside jail.

Sean Kelly tells the Chronicle-Herald there are on average 15 people a week who are being sent home. And they are getting credit for time served, even though they are serving it at their homes instead of the jail.

Kelly says not everyone qualifies and they don’t know until they show up at the jail on Friday that they’ll be sent home.

He says correctional officers do phone checks. If they call and no one answers, a police officer is sent over.

While officials say it is helping with the overcrowding, opposition Liberals say it’s a sign the NDP doesn’t have the situation under control at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.
