The Red Cross is trying to jump-start your emergency planning.
The Red Cross is launching its “Be Ready” awareness campaign today which includes several public outreach activities designed to get people thinking about how they’d cope with a disaster.
Alicia Benton with the Canadian Red Cross tells News 95.7 they’re handing out free emergency preparedness kits today because not nearly enough of us are ready to take care of ourselves for the first 72 hours after a disaster.
“It’s just so important that people are ready for an emergency,” she said. “The little things that you really need that don’t think about in the first 72 hours. Flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit and extra car keys.”
Benton says city dwellers can be complacent.
“People in the city generally think that services will still be continuing,” she said. “Sometimes that’s the case, but when that isn’t the case it’s really important that everybody’s prepared to take care of themselves for 72 hours.”
Red Cross officials will be handing out the starter kits on Spring Garden Road this afternoon.
