A major Hydro project could one day plug into Nova Scotia

A new hydroelectric project in Labrador will one day plug into Nova Scotia’s power grid. The head of Newfoundland’s Energy Corporation, Nalcor, updated plans Monday, praising Emera and Nova Scotia Power.
Ed Martin says both companies are looking for a win-win deal and admits power corridors will be required through both Nova Scotia and Quebec at some point in the near future.
“We’re also going to be looking at the size of the resource we have, we’ve come to the conclusion that we need both routes,” he says.
But Martin admits, his company is feeling resistance from La Belle Province.
“We have a tremendous amount of U-S and Canadian exports on deck and it’s a big deal for us,” he says, “We’re prepared to pay a lot of money to Quebec to get through there, so we know what has happened is not proper.”
Martin says Nalcor is appealing a Quebec decision, but that he’s interested in the best deal that can be hammered out now. He is stressing, however, there is no deal in place yet.
