We can work it out – Mayor Kelly

Halifax’s mayor says the municipality’s money woes are challenging, but not insurmountable.

Peter Kelly is responding to a staff report that says HRM expenses are outpacing revenue and a funding gap of $13.9 million is projected for 2011-2012. Staff’s projection for 2012-13 is an imbalance of $15.6 million.

And that suggests a cash crunch is imminent with either service cuts, increased taxes or both could be on the way.

Kelly tells the Chronicle Herald if they keep the status quo service-wise, based on the current revenue flows then there would be some kind of shortfall. But he adds “until that determination is made, it’s a funding gap.”

Under provincial law, the municpality is obligated to balance the books. Council will be discussing the gap at their meeting on Tuesday. Mayor Kelly tells the newspaper “we’re going to have to find a way to become efficient in what we do.”
