Glooscap First Nations Chief defends compensation package

They’re pulling in nearly $1.7 million a year. The total income for the Chief of the Glooscap First Nation and her three counselors.
Chief Shirley Clarke’s salary is listed at nearly $139,000 a year. On top of that, she gets $34,000 for travel expenses and $70,000 is classified as “other.” Clarke could not specify what these other expenses are.
“I’ll be honest, I don’t do the numbers”, Shirley says. “And I think we can get back to you on this if that’s what you’d like.”
Councilor Mike Halliday takes in nearly $978,000 a year. Chief Clarke says over $718,000 of that is NOT taxpayer money.
“That money is contracts that he does for the reserve here,” Clarke explains. “He’s an entrepreneur. He’s well known in the community, he’s first nation, he has spent a lot of his own money. He builds houses on the reserve, he builds the roads.”
Chief Clarke believes she and her councilors are compensated fairly adding that if anything, they’re overworked.
