Teen facing arson charges after excavator torched

A teenaged boy from Lantz is facing charges of arson after an excavator was torched overnight.

RCMP were called to the East Hants Sportsplex around 2:30 a.m. today by a passerby who saw the Caterpillar excavator in flames.

Cst. Les Kakonyi tells News 95.7 the suspect was arrested very soon afterwards.

“There had been freshly fallen snow and our members were able to track the footprints, one set of footprints to the alleged suspect’s home in Lantz,” he explained.

Kakonyi says the teen is known to police.

“He is someone that we’ve had contact with before and in any event, he’s currently under investigation by our detachment on unrelated arson and damages that have occurred in the area in the last little while,”

Damage to the excavator is estimated at $260,000. The teen has been charged with arson.
