Decade-old cold case cracked, murder charge laid

A missing person case that went cold ten years ago has been cracked by the Mounties, and has resulted in a first-degree murder charge.

A man already in prison is accused of killing Charles Maddison in 2000.

In September of that year, Maddison set out from his Colchester County home for some doctors appointments. He never showed up. Days later, his truck was found burned in a clearing in East Hants.

Two people have already been charged with accessory after the fact in Maddison’s murder. Today police say 36 year old Michael John Lawrence is accused of first degree murder. He’s also charged with murdering Kirk Mersereau and Nancy Christenson.

RCMP Sergeant Brigdit Legere says Maddison isn’t linked to the kind of stuff some of the other folks in this still-unfolding case were doing.

“It appears as though he was just very much an innocent bystander,” says Sgt. Legere. “He was not involved with these individuals at all, and very much an innocent person who ended up being murdered.”

This year, the justice department offered a 150-thousand dollar reward for the information that’d solve the Maddison case. Police won’t tell us whether they have new physical evidence or testimony that broke the case.
