Defeated Glooscap council contender promises recount

A controversial election on the Glooscap First Nation has not yet resulted in a recount.

Kristen Halliday won the election by only five votes, beating opponent Brian Smith by a final tally of 41 to 36.

Smith is alleging there were irregularities in the vote, saying his scrutineer was not allowed to examine supposedly spoiled ballots.

The Herald reports an appeal must be launched within 30 days of the results being made public for a recount to happen.

Smith has vowed to appeal the vote.

Band Chief Shirley Clarke has not commented publicly on the matter.

Halliday’s father, band councillor Michael Halliday, was in the news last year when it was revealed he was earning about $1 million a year working for a band of just over 300 people.
