PC Leader says by-election is a good idea

He’s not calling for a by-election, but says it’s a good idea. A day after the Progressive Conservative Party watched one of its key members change stripes, the Tory leader says voters deserve to be heard. Jamie Baillie says he noticed a notch-up in voter cynicism when former PC interim leader Karen Casey announced she will now be toting the Liberal banner, during a press conference yesterday.

Speaking on News 95.7’s Maritime Morning with Jordi Morgan, Baillie says he talked to the Tories in Casey’s riding of Colchester North and they continue to support the Conservatives. However, Liberal leader Stephen McNeil has a similar story after meeting with fellow Grits in the riding. McNeil adds Members of the Legislative Assembly have the right to switch parties if they feel that is the best way to serve their constituents.

Any disgruntled voters may have to wait for a general election to vent their disapproval. MLAs who change parties are not subjected to a by-election unless they step down.

Callers to our talk show say they respect Casey’s decision and are not interested in going to the polls at this time.
