Smart Card Naming Contest Finalists

VANCOUVER(NEWS1130) – Sorry fans of George, Halibut and Salmon.

The finalists are in for TransLink’s smart card transit pass naming contest – it’ll either be TPass, Compass or Starfish.

Ken Hardie with TransLink says the smart card will replace all the tickets and passes that are currently being used in the transit system.

When the smart cards debut in 2013, you’ll be able to load them with money (like debit cards) to pay transit fares.

Hardie says these cards are in use around the world.

“There’s the Octopus in Hong Kong, the Oyster in London, the Orca card is in Seattle, and the Clipper card is in San Francisco.”

The three finalists were subjected to focus groups and legal and trademark checks.

There were 56,000 entries, with the winner getting an iPad and a loaded smart card for a year.

You can vote for your favourite at Translink.ca starting Friday.

A winner is expected to be announced in March.
