The fair is coming to Halifax – but this one doesn’t have livestock, rides and cotton candy.
The second annual divorce fair begins today, providing a place where people ending a relationship can access a wide range of professionals whose services they might need.
That doesn’t refer to pawnshops or dating services, but rather realtors, money managers and lawyers.
Organizer Maria Franks at the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia says the “divorce fair” concept is a play on words.
“People often think ‘is divorce fair?'” she said. “The husband thinks he got badly done by and the wife thinks she got badly done by.”
Franks says men and women frequently have different concerns in a divorce.
“They seem to have different questions, different aspects. For example, the reality is that most women are the primary caregivers so their questions may centre around custody issues and child support,” she said. “Whereas most men have access, so their issues may centre around how they keep that relationship with their children and what kind of access is there.”
The fair runs for two days at the Atlantica Hotel. Friday’s session is for men only and Saturday’s is for women.
