Canada Games preparations enter homestretch

We’re less than a month away from the start of the Canada Games and organizers say they’re putting the final touches on preparations.
The opening of the Canada Games centre over the weekend, which Premier Darrell Dexter calls the “crown jewel” of the games, is a significant milestone for officials, suggesting plans to host thousands of athletes from across the country are progressing smoothly.
Canada Games CEO Chris Morrissey tells me the entertainment for the event is also falling into place.
“The opening ceremonies, with the Trews and Jimmy Rankin and The Stanfields and many others,” he said. “We’ll announce very shortly some of the lineups for our festival site, so there’s a lot of details to come out in the next couple of days and weeks.”
Morrissey says while everything seems to be coming together, there’s still plenty that needs to be done.
“We’re starting to take over some of the facilities and put in our flags and pagentry,” he said. “We’re in the process of training our volunteers, final preparations with sponsors and funding partners on all of their plans as well.”
Morrissey says the community is getting excited about the games, and notes that anyone wanting to get tickets to some of the events should act now.
“Some events like curling are sold out for gold and semi-final games,” he said. “Male and female hockey, the gold medal games are selling very fast.”
The games will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Nova Scotia and will feature more than 3600 athletes.
