Keep yourself safe on the roads this winter

It seems like every time we get a little bit of snow, dozens of accidents start piling up in the HRM. In some cases, there’s nothing you can do. But, in most cases, the “accident” can be prevented.
Safe driving consultant, Tom Hickey, has been instructing winter driving courses set up by RCMP across the province this winter. At a course in Prospect Friday afternoon, Hickey mentioned a few common mistakes that drivers make in bad weather.
“Brake when they shouldn’t! Over steer. We talked about correcting a skid and the simplest way to correct a skid is no gas, that’s what put us there in the first place,” Hickey explains. “No brake. If you brake in a skid you’re going to enhance a skid. And steer. It’s just that simple.”
Hickey says speed is the biggest factor in winter related crashes. He says it’s crucial for drivers to slow down when road conditions are not ideal.
