Summer concert excitement is reaching a fever pitch in the Maritimes, thanks to rumours that Irish rockers U2 may headline this year’s summer music festival on Magnetic Hill.
Recent changes on the band’s official website have fueled the speculation that the band will play the Moncton concert site on July 30.
The band is currently on its 360 Tour which was scheduled to end in Pittsburgh in July. But a member of U2tours.com tells the Rick Howe Show there’s been a significant change.
“The Pittsburgh concert, which they had previously announced for July 26, was once listed on the website as the last date of the North American tour,” said Aaron Sams. “It’s now listed as the last date of the US tour.”
Sams, who has seen more than a dozen U2 shows world-wide, says he’s already booked a hotel room in Moncton to ensure he gets to see the unconfirmed show.
He added he has inside information about a large group of people booked into a Moncton hotel on July 27. Sams will only speculate that it could be roadies from the tour, because that is the day they check out of Pittsburgh.
Cole McLean with Atlanticrocks.com said a U2 concert in Moncton might not be part of the band’s current tour. The 360 Tour is designed for stadiums and arenas where the audience completely encircles the band. This would not be the case on Magnetic Hill.
“U2 is presently on its 360 Tour which has a very extravagant stage set up,” he said. “What may happen is the Moncton show may be more of a regular show and be stripped down in order to accommodate the venue. They may market Moncton in a different way.”
Magnetic Hill has hosted The Rolling Stones and AC/DC in previous summers.
