HRP wants budget hike

Halifax Regional Police are asking the city’s police commission for an increase to their operating budget for 2011-2012.

The force is asking for a 8.25 per cent hike to be divided between policing services, emergency dispatch, crossing guards and bylaw enforcment.

The Chronicle Herald reported 3.35 per cent of the increase would cover salaries, benefits and retirement allowances.

Another chunk would cover the increasing cost of witness protection, DNA testing and interperter services among others.

If the hike is granted the police department’s gross budget will be approximately $82 million, up from $78 million, a senior municipal officials told the paper. Direct policing costs would account for about $68 million of the total.

The commission will send a recommendation to regional council on March 14.
