Garbage bylaw changes going to public for feedback

Regional council will hold a public hearing next month on proposed changes to trash collection rules.
A bylaw amendment would mean each household can put only four bags of garbage on the curb every two weeks, and three of them have to be clear.
A staff report suggests the changes will help reduce the amount of recyclables or organics ending up in landfills.
Councillor Steve Streatch (Eastern Shore – Musquodoboit Valley) tells the Herald the changes seem “heavy handed” and he’s been hearing lots of criticism – particularly about the clear bags, which he calls “an affront to privacy.”
Peter Lund, the former chair of a solid waste advisory committee, says if the changes are approved there would be a six-month window for public education.
Even after that, he says the fines would be a last resort for repeat violators.
The public hearing is scheduled for March 8.
