Goad wins gold for Nova Scotia

More than 100 medals have been doled out to the nation’s best young athletes during the first week of the Canada Winter Games and now Nova Scotia is part of the winner’s circle, clinching two medals in gymnastics.

Jared Goad, 17, delivered a near-flawless performance in the floor event at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax Thursday evening, posting at 13.5 score.

The Bible Hill native was emotional following his gold medal win.

“It’s surreal to think that this happened to me out of anybody,” Goad told the NSCC. “Four years ago, if I was going to go to win a gold medal, let alone go to the Canada Games, I wouldn’t have believe it. It’s unreal.”

Goad has been training for three years with the Cobequid Spartans. Floor was the only event he qualified to compete in, placing third leading into Thursday’s event.

“Everybody’s just doing lots nice, because I’m the first person to win, not just a gold medal, but any medal for Nova Scotia. When it’s in the hometown, all my friends came to watch. It was unreal,” said Goad.

Shortly after Goad’s gold medal win, Lawrencetown native Stephen Clouter took to the parallel bars to show off his skills. A 12.5 score clinched the bronze medal for Clouter.
