Nova Scotia boxers win four medals at Canada Games

Nova Scotia boxers added four medals to the provinces medal count at the Canada Games, electrifying the near sell-out crowd at the Halifax Forum Friday night.
5,500 people took in the one of the main attractions of the games live, and countless people across the country watched on TSN2.
North Preston’s Jason Downey started the night of right for the home crowd, securing gold in the 52 kg class while Kentville’s Matt Whitford took top prize in the 91 kg class.
Taylor Gordon of Beaver Bank was unable to best his opponent from Ontario, Zsolt Daranyi, in a chippy match that saw Daranyi strike Gordon with a low blow and throw him to the mat, but Gordon’s performance was still good enough to win silver in the 64 kg
Middelton’s Cyrus Taylor also won a silver in the 69 kg class.
Premier Darrell Dexter released a statement congratulating the team.
“The performance tonight by our Nova Scotia boxers will go down as a proud day in our province’s history,” said Dexter. “Team Nova Scotia continues to build on one of its best efforts at the Canada Winter Games and we’re so fortunate to have been able to watch it happen here at home.”
Team Nova Scotia’s medal count is now twelve – five gold, six silver and one bronze which puts the province among the leaders for the Centennial Cup, the award given to the team that shows the biggest improvement over the previous winter games.
