Workers ratify contract with Nova Scotia health authority

About 3,900 health workers in Nova Scotia’s largest health district have ratified a new contract.
The workers reached a tentative agreement with the Capital District Health Authority on March 28 after lengthy negotiations.
The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union voted says 1,887 members of Local 42 voted and 56 per cent of the votes were in favour of ratification.
The deal covers more than 170 job classifications, including medical laboratory technologists, licensed practical nurses, social workers and respiratory therapists.
Joan Jessome, president of the union, says the narrow margin sends a clear message that members aren’t happy with the one per cent economic increase in each of the two years of the deal.
Jessome says that will be a focus of the next round of bargaining, which is just around the corner.
The new collective agreement runs from Nov. 1, 2009 to Oct. 31, 2011.
