Murder victim remembered as lovable prankster

People who knew metro’s latest murder victim are paying tribute to him online.
Hundreds have become members of two Facebook pages devoted to Nathan Cross’ memory.
The 22-year-old was shot and killed Sunday evening in North Preston. Police say they have no suspects.
No one was ever arrested for the murder of Cross’ mother, Laura Lee, who disappeared in July 2001 at age 33. She was found dead the next year.

Police are now confirming that Cross was wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time of his death.
RCMP Cpl. Scott MacRae tells News 95.7’s Rick Howe Show police are finding more people wearing body armour at crime scenes – and it’s an emerging trend that they aren’t happy about.
“Usually if you’re in possession of soft body armour, potentially, you may be engaged in criminal activity,” MacRae says. “Therefore you pose a threat to public safety”
The province announced legislation last week that will make it illegal for ordinary citizens to buy or possess body armour.
Reports suggest that Cross was shot in the face and while MacRae couldn’t confirm that, he says the fatal gunshot wound was in the upper body.
“We don’t believe this is a random act at this time,” MacRae says. “As a result, we will be increasing patrols in the area just to show the community that the RCMP/HRP, we are fully engaged. We really want to get to the bottom of this and find out what the root cause is.”
RCMP are looking for connections to recent shooting incidents, including the death of Stacey Adams, 20, in Lake Echo on April 10.
