Rain may washout May rainfall record

Halifax is due for an entire week of rain, which could bring enough precipitation to help toward a record-breaking rainfall total this month.
Environment Canada is calling for 14 millimeters of rain for Tuesday, with rain and cloud cover for the rest of the week, followed by sunshine on Saturday.
“We have what’s called a classic omega block over the Maritimes,” explains News 95.7 meteorologist Richard Zurawski.
“This system is very, very stable,” he said. “That’s why we’ve been getting the weather that we’ve been getting. Over the next four or five days, there’s no real break, at least until the weekend.”
Environment Canada reports the average rainfall for Halifax as 118 mm of rain for the month of May with the most extreme rainfall recorded in a single day as 72.1 mm in 1971.
Zurawski puts his average at 130 mm of rain for May, adding it’s too early to predict whether the rainfall record will be broken this year.
“It’s really tough to say,” he said. “We’re only into the first week of May. Now if it continues this way, than yes.”
Both our resident meteorologist and the national forecaster are calling for a sunny weekend.
However Zurawski said Saturday is too far away to give an accurate prediction.
As Haligonians cope with the wet weather, News 95.7 has found out how people in other soggy places deal with the constant downpour.
“We cry a lot,” joked News 1130 reporter Mike Lloyd in Vancouver. “We’re depressed a lot. Gore-Tex is more than just a handy thing. It’s a fashion statement out here.”
He suggested Haligonians escape the wet by getting indoors at the pub.
England is also know for its wet weather, although one Essex resident is insisting it doesn’t rain as often as people think it does.
Licensed conveyancer Tanya Flack said it doesn’t get the British down.
“Not at all,” said Flack during a transatlantic telephone call. “It’s great for anyone who enjoys gardening, and anyone who enjoys being out on a sunny day isn’t going to enjoy sitting out on grass which is completely brown from having no water.”
