Halifax shows its Pride

The Halifax Pride Parade took over the streets of Halifax Saturday.
Some of the highlights listed by The Chronicle Herald included the Halifax Regional Police Victim Services Unit’s choice of music – Madonna – and firefighters going with It’s Raining Men.
Mayor Peter Kelly was there and handed out candy.
There was all kind of action from floats to acrobats and adults were offered necklaces, flags, brochures and more than a few corporate giveaways.
The Herald estimated the youngest parade participant to be about three months old, while Northwood seniors marched holding signs about international gay rights.
On Friday Halifax’s first-ever Dyke and Trans March took place.
Organizers said they wanted to challenge the corporatization of Halifax Pride and what they called its lack of diversity.
Aside from protections in schools and on the streets, The Herald reports organizers said they want to see gender eliminated from government-issued identification cards and greater protection of refugees fleeing gender-related violence in their home countries.
