Rusty H-M-C-S Windsor won’t be diving deep

A navy document says one of Canada’s four Victoria-class submarines will be restricted in its ability to dive deep beneath the seas because of rust.
The briefing note obtained by The Canadian Press says officers recommended repairing the rusty areas on H-M-C-S Windsor by grinding away and priming.
That was chosen rather than a fuller repair that would have included the welding of pieces of metal onto the hull; however the document says the option chosen means a depth limit would be needed.
Navy spokesman Blaine Duffley declined to confirm if a depth limit had been imposed, saying that decision was classified.
He does say the sub is safe and will be able to fulfill the navy’s requirements, but David Zimmerman – a military historian at the University of Victoria – says it’s unfortunate such a limit would have to be in place because it could reduce training possibilities.
H-M-C-S Windsor is the newest of the submarines Canada purchased from the British, but over the last decade it has only been at sea for less than a year.
