Cormier handed 18-year prison sentence for kidnapping

MONCTON, N.B. –  The Moncton man accused of holding a woman against her will in a basement apartment for 26 days last year has been sentenced to 18 years for kidnapping.

Romeo Jacques Cormier was also sentenced to 10 years for sexual assault, 8 years for unlawful confinement, 3 years for assault with a knife, and 2 and a half years for assault, all to be served concurrently, minus time in remand.

Cormier was convicted last month.

A 55 year-old Moncton woman testified that he took her at knifepoint from a mall parking lot to the basement of a rooming house in February of 2010, where he kept her for nearly a month until she managed to escape.

Cormier must serve just over 8 years before being eligible for parole.

His name will also be added to the Sex Offender Registry, and he is banned from owning firearms for life.
