Hurricane Irene heading towards Maritimes

Halifax is under a tropical storm warning and a wind warning as Tropical Storm Irene heads towards the Maritimes.
Irene is expected to weaken to a post-tropical depression by the time it tracks through northwestern New Brunswick Monday morning. Irene has already lost hurricane status, the U.S hurricane centre mad the announcement around 10 a.m. Atlantic as the storm made landfall in New York’s Coney Island.
However, showers in Halifax are expected to turn to heavy rain Sunday afternoon with 100 kilometre per hour winds expected to start Sunday evening. The Canadian Hurricane Centre’s Chris Fogarty says the storm is very large and will only spread as it loses hurricane status.
There are already several cancellations at Halifax International. At this point it’s mostly flights heading to and from the U.S.
Eight people have been killed since Irene made landfall yesterday morning in North Carolina.
