Distracted driving blitz underway

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Early September is a busy time on the roads and a bad time to try to cheat the rules on distracted driving.
Don’t try to sneak a call, email or text on your phone while you’re driving. Police are well into their September ticketing blitz, targeting distracted drivers.
Superintendent Norm Gaumont with RCMP Traffic Services says too many people are still doing it. “Oh yeah! I can’t go to work or go home from work everyday without pulling people over that are still talking on their cell phones or texting.”
So that means if you’re staring at your lap while driving, don’t be surprised if you’re nailed with a $167 ticket. “We’re hoping that people start putting those things away. It’s incredibly dangerous. Distracted driving is the number one cause of fatal [accidents] right now.”
Police want to double the number of tickets they typically hand out in September, from 1,000 to 2,000.
