Tall ships returning to NS

We’re only into fall right now, but Waterfront Development is already planning for a major event coming to Halifax next summer.
The Tall Ships are returning to Nova Scotia in July. The ships will arrive in Halifax July 19-23 and visit outports across the province July 24-30.
Minister of Economic and Rural Development Percy Paris announced Thursday the province will contribute $780,000 to the event.
“This is an investment,” he says. “I think the tall ships event is a proven event.”
President of Waterfront Development, Colin MacLean, estimates the total cost of hosting the Tall Ships of Nova Scotia 2012 event will be about $3.5 million. But he says it’s money well spent because it will provide a boost to Nova Scotia’s economy and tourism industry.
“Based on our last experience which was in 2009, we were able to attract 94,000 people from outside of Nova Scotia who came for the purposes of seeing tall ships,” he says. “Those 94,000 people were able to generate $32 million worth of economic impact.”
The event is part of the Tall Ships Challenge – Atlantic Coast 2012 Race. The Race will start in Savannah, Georgia and end here in Halifax.
Halifax’s Theodore Tugboat will follow the ships on their journey. Theodore will leave for the states next week and return with the Tall Ships in July.
