There are no tents in the Grand Parade today, now that Occupy Nova Scotia protesters have moved to Victoria Park – as promised.
Protesters said they’d vacate the public square to make room for Dignity Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies this week.
Spokesperson John Thibeau tells Metro Halifax some members actually prefer the Victoria Park site, although he notes that City Hall can’t see the protesters all the time.
He also claims the city has cut off power to the park in hopes of deterring the protesters, forcing them to rely on donated generators and solar power.
The group says it will return to the grand parade on Saturday, which Mayor Peter Kelly isn’t happy about.
He says the Grand Parade is a public space, and with several other events coming up, the protesters should recognize they’ve had their time – and should make way.
Kelly says the Grand Parade will still need a few touchups before the Remembrance Day ceremony, but says he’s grateful the protesters have given city officials enough time to tend to the preparations.
