Operation Red Nose volunteers needed

With only six weeks before Christmas, Operation Red Nose organizers are calling for volunteers to sign up for a night of chauffeuring services over the holidays in Halifax.
Last year 322 volunteers drove home nearly 1,200 people who had had too much to drink while enjoying the holiday spirit, and $8,500 was raised in donations.
Coun. Sue Uteck (Northwest Arm – South End) explained, with corporate sponsorship a total of $18,000 was donated to the province’s Safe Grad Program, which promotes responsible drinking among young people.
“I’m always so impress that with an operation like this people come forth and give willing on the holidays,” said Uteck. “By doing this program you’re also building that future volunteer base for those kids who participate in the Safe Grad Program. They understand where this comes from so you’re building the volunteer base.”
A compliment of police officials and political dignitaries in plush reindeer antlers helped launched this year’s campaign at City Hall Thursday.
Red-vested volunteers will be on the road Friday and Saturday nights, beginning Nov. 25 and Dec. 17.
Anyone who thinks they’ve had too much to drink can contact Operation Red Nose 481-7433 between the hours of 8 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. for a free ride.
Three volunteers will drive you, in your vehicle to your destination.
